Unit 2
Product Planning Process – Steps. Opportunity identification – breakdown structure- product development charter. Product Life Cycle. Technology Life Cycle - Understanding Customer Needs - Disruptive Technologies- Product Specification - Concept Generation – Activity- Steps- Techniques.

Unit 3
Concept Selection – Importance, Methodology, concept Screening, Concept Scoring. Concept Testing. Product Architecture- Definition, Modularity, implication, Establishment, Delayed Differentiation, Platform Planning.

Unit 4
Industrial Design, Design for Manufacturing-Value Engineering-Ergonomics-Prototyping-Robust Design- Design for X-failure rate curve-product use testing-Collaborative Product development- Product development economics-scoring model- financial analysis. Design in the context of shared services - Virtual Validation and Virtual Manufacturing, 3Dimensional Printing.

Unit 5
Defining Intellectual Property and Patents, Patent Searches and Application, Patent Ownership and Transfer, Patent Infringement, New Developments and International Patent Law. Case studies, recent trends

Total Quality Management
Elective 1 5 Credits





Unit 1

Quality – vision, mission and policy statements. Customer Focus – customer perception of quality, Translating needs into requirements, customer retention. Dimensions of product and service quality. Cost of quality.

Unit 2

Overview of the contributions of Deming, Juran Crosby, Masaaki Imai, Feigenbaum, Ishikawa, Taguchi techniques – introduction, loss function, parameter and tolerance design, signal to noise ratio. Concepts of Quality circle, Japanese 5S principles and 8D methodology.

Unit 3

Meaning and significance of statistical process control (SPC) – construction of control charts for variables and attributed. Process capability – meaning, significance and measurement – Six sigma - concepts of process capability.
Reliability concepts – definitions, reliability in series and parallel, product life characteristics curve. Total productive maintenance (TMP), Terotechnology. Business process Improvement (BPI) – principles, applications, reengineering process, benefits and limitations.

Unit 4

Quality functions deployment (QFD) – Benefits, Voice of customer, information organization, House of quality (HOQ), building a HOQ, QFD process. Failure mode effect analysis  for product and process (FMEA) –  requirements of reliability, failure rate, FMEA stages, design, process and documentation. Seven Tools (old & new). Bench marking and POKA YOKE.

Unit 5

Introduction to IS/ISO 9004:2000 – quality management systems – guidelines for performance improvements. Quality Audits. TQM culture, Leadership – quality council, employee involvement,  Quality Circles, motivation, empowerment, recognition and reward - TQM framework, benefits, awareness and obstacles. Kaizen, Waste elimination (7 wastes)
